Cultivating Everyday Courage
Hannah Braime on contagious courage and allowing ourselves to be seen.
Alive 11: Courage
I’ve learned that courage is rarely a grand gesture or a bold act. Most of the time, it shows up every day in the small choices we make. Courage can be as simple as saying “yes” to something we deeply want or “no” to something we’d prefer not to do.
It’s that moment of direct eye contact and real connection, even though we experience the urge to look away. It’s the decision to feel what we feel without apologising, justifying, or numbing. It’s sharing our unbridled joy, our hopes and our successes as much as it is sharing our pain, our fears, and our failures.
Courage is the best kind of contagious and, when we allow ourselves to be seen as the complex, often-contradictory and deeply capable human beings we are, we encourage others to be courageous too.
If you were to add five per cent more courage to your life, what would you do differently today?
